KENNETH Watts was honoured by Motocross Management with the prestigious Lorraine MacDonald Services to Motocross Award at their Presentation Evening on Saturday, September 17.
No stranger around the motocross track in Victoria, Kenny, as he is fondly known, was duly recognised for his many years volunteering for his club: the Horsham Motorcycle Club and to the Western Region Motocross Committee.
He was also recognised for his time as a commentator for the Victorian Senior & Junior Motocross Championships, and for his outstanding efforts in securing the rights to host the Junior World Motocross Championship in Horsham in 2018.
For Kenny, it was a huge honour to receive the ‘Mrs Mac Award’: “Mrs Mac is a living legend. It’s an absolute honour to be given this award. I’m only the seventh person to have received this award.
“There are some fantastic names above me on there and it’s just a privilege to even be on there I reckon,” Kenny said.
Kenny is currently the president of the Horsham Motorcycle Club and the president of the Western Region Motocross Series. The Horsham Motorcycle Club will also host next year’s Australian Junior Motocross Championships.
“When I started out in the sport Mrs Mac was like God. She was everything. Everywhere you looked she was there. As I said on the night, Mrs Mac is a living legend. She has left a lasting legacy and it’ll take a lot to try and duplicate what she has done for our sport,” he added.
Kenny got involved in motocross when he and his family won a free family pass to witness the MX Nationals in 2002 and within nine months he became sports secretary of the club.
“We won the family pass and a club member spotted Aaron (his son) riding at a track near where we lived and invited him to come ride at the club and the rest they say is history,” Kenny said.
One of Kenny’s highlights of the year was witnessing his son Cory Watts improve on both a state and national level and commenting the MX Nationals: “That was an absolute blast,” he said.
For Kenny, motocross is his passion. “I just love the sport,” he said. “I’d like to thank Motocross Management for the award and thank all the members of the Horsham Motorcycle Club. It was a major surprise for me to receive it,” Kenny added.
