The fourth and final round of the 2017 Victorian Junior MX Championships will take place this weekend down at the Wonthaggi Motocross Track and one of the riders ready to tackle the weekend head on is Mitchell Johnson.
Mitchell is racing in the 85cc SW/BW class and is leading the pack after three rounds, last year he competed in the same class and finished around the middle of the pack after only completing three rounds of the Championships.
“So far this year, I’ve finished third overall at Cobram, first overall at Colac (with three wins from three races!) and fifth overall at Rosebud where there was some great racing between the top five riders,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell is paying his own way to ride, working through the week by chopping firewood to pay for his new KTM 85 with his father Adrian saying that “Mitch doesn’t really rely on me, he gets out there and makes his own way for his motor bike habit”.
“He’s a very fit and focused young man,” Adrian added.
Throughout the week Mitchell is training hard on and off the bike, training in the gym and heading out and riding when he can.
“I’m coached every Wednesday by James Clay, I go to the gym two or three times a week and I’m always trying to ride at least three days a week,” Mitchell said.
When asked what he enjoys about the Victorian Junior MX Championships, Mitchell said,
“I love the sportsmanship with the rest of the boys in my class, we’re competitive on the track but good mates off the track.”
The final round of racing for the Victorian Junior MX Championship is this weekend (Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd July) at the Wonthaggi MX Track.
