MOE motorcyclist Tyson Jones won the Victorian Superbike title by four points over his older brother Nathan Jones at the final round of the 2016 Motul Pirelli Victorian Road Racing Championship at the State Motorcycle Sports Complex at Broadford last weekend, November 12-13.
Tyson, 30, trailed Nathan, 32, by a single point heading into the final round. Tyson rode superbly throughout the weekend, picking up a second-place in Race 1 on Saturday, and two wins during Race 2 and Race 3 on Sunday during wet and challenging conditions.
“The weekend went really well. On Saturday, Nathan’s pace in qualifying was pretty quick. It was a really good race (Race 1) on Saturday. Nathan just pipped me,” Tyson said. “On Sunday, the rains came. It was really good racing.
“I was really happy with the pace in the wet, which was good, because normally Nathan beats me in the wet.
“It came down the last race. It was pretty hectic to get the quick (tyres) back on because the track tried up pretty quickly. I’m just super happy with how it all went,” Tyson added. “I’m absolutely thrilled winning it.
“The last couple of years has been close, especially last year when I crashed due to a broken chain so I’m very happy to win it this year,” he said.
Tyson picks the last round at Broadford yesterday as the best all season: “With the weather it was pretty hectic at times and quite stressful but to get the result in the end made all the hard work worth it,” he said. Tyson hopes that he’ll be back for next year’s VRRC to defend his title.
Runner-up Nathan Jones was happy for his brother taking out the title: “Obviously, I would’ve liked to have won but I’m very happy for him. I know the hard work that he has put into it so it’s good to see it’s paid-off for him. We had a really good battle all weekend,” Nathan said.
It wasn’t all disappointment for Nathan at the weekend, however, as he clocked his personal best time of 56.876 around Broadford’s challenging Road Race Circuit.
“We finally got down to our quick times again, achieving 56.00s throughout the races, and I’m excited for next year and what that will bring,” he added.
“I would really like to thank 3J Racing, Race Center, Cykel, Pirelli, MSA Custom Rides, Mornington Motorcycles, MotoTrack Accessories, Ricondi, Rated R Custom Motorcycle Parts, Speedangle Australia, Morwell Kawasaki, Emtek Racing, and Sweetaz Printing for all their support throughout the season. It means a lot,” Nathan said.
Tyson added: “I would like to say a massive thank-you to 3J Racing and the family for all the hard work that they put in throughout the year. Same goes with Race Center, especially Darren Sciberras who is constantly looking to improving. Thanks also to Cykel, Pirelli and Ricondi for all their support too.”
