KILSYTH road racer Drew Sells got his Victorian road racing season off to an emphatic start after winning all three races, breaking up to 2 lap-records in the process, to claim the overall round win in the 350cc Production Class at the opening round of the 2016 Pirelli Motul Victorian Road Racing Championship at the State Motorcycle Sports Complex at Broadford last weekend, April 9-10.
In qualifying, Drew clocked his fastest time around Broadford on his Kawasaki Ninja 300 with a 1:05.038.
“We qualified on poll with the lap-record, then we went (and won) three out of three races, and also broke the race lap-record in the process,” Drew, who also achieved a blistering 1:05.041 in Lap 8 in Race 2, said.
“It was a bit of a surprise in how I rode, and how the bike was set-up. It was really, really good but also a bit surprising at the same time,” he added.
Drew is hoping for more of the same, when the second round of the VRRC heads to Phillip Island in August where the 17-year-old achieved 3 personal best times at the same venue in the final round of the Australian Superbike Championships (ASBK) last year.
“Hopefully we can carry the same momentum into round two of the VRRC and next weekend at the Sydney Motorsport Park for round three of the ASBK,” Drew, who currently sits in third place in the 300 Production class, added.
“We had a really good testing session there two weekends ago, and we’ll be carrying some good confidence heading over there. It was a good, fun track. I really liked it and I hope to get some good results up there and move forward in that championship,” Drew continued.
On the VRRC, Drew is hoping his good results continue. “I’m looking forward to going back to the Island. I love that track a lot and hope to continue our championship aspirations and our points lead,” he added.
Round 2 of the 2016 Pirelli Motul Victorian Road Racing Championships continues at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on August 27-28. For further information please visit: www.vrrc.com.au.
