The Victorian Junior Motocross (VJMX) Championships got off to a roaring start at Shipwreck Cove on the 7th and 8th of April. With over 300 riders participating from all over Australia, there was fierce competition, and some great racing to be seen!
Organised by the Motorcycling Victoria Motocross Committee the VJMX Championships were once again a seamless operation. Countless hours go into organising these events by our dedicated volunteers and this event was really a testament to their dedication and passion.
Liam Andrews took out the A grade 250 and also the A Grade 125 classes, which is a phenomenal effort given that Andrews has only been back on the bike for about a month and not had any real pre-season training after returning from a broken arm AND leg while training in America!
B grade youngster Oscar Nastri nearly getting the double; however Nastri was unfortunately bitten by a bee on the start line of his second race on Sunday, Nastri was treated by the medics and missed the last race which he seemed have in the bag! Nastri has remained consistent while jumping between two bikes and riding both machines seamlessly and at peak performance!
The A grade BW (Big Wheel) class had 3 Australian champions in it – which we can’t remember ever happening before! The participating champs were; Alex Larwood, Conner Towell and Jett Burgess-Stevens.
Burgess-Stevens (TAS) took out the A grade BW 85 cc class ahead of Alex Larwood (SA) and coming in third was Jacob Sweet doing Victoria proud! Burgess-Stevens is starting to adapt to the 85 very well considering he only stepped up in January this year! Larwood is doing exceptionally well at the pointy end where expected. Sweet encountered a few hiccups in the early races but recovered well to make up ground in the field.
With round 1 done and dusted, riders should be aiming to get to the remaining three rounds in May, June & July at Korumburra MC, Dandenong MC & Ballarat MC.
It’s a long series, anything could happen, learn from your mistakes, don’t give up and fight it out. Even if you are in a position that you won’t win, don’t be disheartened – make those race leaders work hard for their placing, race hard and put the pressure on!
