14-year-old Maddison Stafford will be one of 13 expected participants to take part in the Girls class this weekend when Korumburra Motorcycle Club hosts the opening round of the M2R 2016 Victorian Junior Motocross Championships Presented by Honda Genuine Parts & Accessories on March 12-13.
Maddy, from North Bayswater, will compete in the Girls class with a record number of 13 female participants, including three from Korumburra, expected to take part. Up to 12 girls took part in the same class last year.
Motorcycling Victoria’s Inclusion & Committees Manager Ms Peta Thomas is very happy with the expected turnout of girls at Korumburra this weekend.
“It’s terrific to see new girls come through the sport and to see numbers improve on last year,” Ms Thomas, who also manages MV’s Female Participation Program, said. “We hope this trend continues,” she added.
Victoria has produced some great female motocross talents over the years with current Australian motocross champion Maddison Brown, the now retired Kristy Gillespie, and exciting young riders in Emma Milesevic and Danielle Foot.
Asked why she enjoyed the sport of motocross, Maddy said: “I love meeting new people and I’d thought I’d give it a go. It’s great fun riding almost every weekend and having fun with my friends.”
Maddy hopes to win the Victorian Girls title this season. “I hope to win it this year. It’s also a great track at Korumburra so I hope to get off to a good start,” Maddy added.
Maddy hopes to emulate the successes of current Australian Women’s motocross champion, Maddison Brown, who will next week head-off and compete in the FIM Women’s World Motocross Championships.
“I hope to turn professional like her one day. She’s a really nice girl, I’ve watched her ride and talked to her and I hope to be an Australian Women’s motocross champion like her one day too,” Maddy said.
Maddison would like to thank her sponsors Krooztune Suspension, Penrite Oils, Rodney’s Mechanical, Repco, and The Collective Family, and her parents for supporting her throughout the season.
