BLUE ROCK Motorcycle Club will welcome well-over 400 of the state’s best motocross riders when they host the opening round of the 2016 Victorian Senior Motocross Championships next weekend at Newborough, March 5-6.
Blue Rock MC president Brad West and his team of volunteers has been busy preparing for the coveted opening round of the state’s premier motocross competition. “We’re pretty excited about hosting the opening round of the Victorian Senior Motocross Championships and we’re hoping to get the season off to a flying start for everybody and produce a great event,” Brad said.
“We’ve been modifying and watering the track and we should be completely up and ready to go for the weekend,” Brad said. “There’s a couple of small changes to the track. We’ll be widening the track as per regulations. The track will be prepared in the best way that we possibly can,” he added.
Being the opening round of the VSMXC, Brad is expecting well-over 400 or even 500 riders to converge on the spectacular track at Newborough this weekend. “I think everybody’s keen to compete in the first round. I think entries will quite high for this one and we’ll have to be on our toes to make sure it’s a great event,” Brad continued.
Local riders from Gippsland such as current Australian Women’s Motocross champion Madison Brown, who’ll compete in the Ladies Expert class, and Angus Gelly, who’ll compete in the C Lites and B Open class will be the riders to watch this weekend, according to Brad. “It’s Angus’s first year in the senior competition and he was carrying a lot of speed at our club day last weekend and was looking really good,” Brad added.
Brad says hosting a Victorian Senior Motocross Championship gives not only the Blue Rock Motorcycle Club a boost but gives the town of Newborough a boost as well. “With close to 500 entries that usually equates to about 4000 to 5000 people, which includes families and friends of competitors, who will visit the Latrobe City area. It’s a massive boost for the local community,” Brad said.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Cr Michael Rossiter, said that this event was a chance to showcase the great facilities Latrobe City has to offer.
“We’re delighted to be hosting the opening round of the event here in Latrobe City. We have a strong reputation as a regional venue of choice for elite sporting events. We have a community that enjoys the thrill of spectating at live action sports activities and Motocross is no exception.
“These sorts of top quality events also inspires our younger community members to get involved, to have a go and to dream big. We wish the competitors the best of luck and hope they enjoy the track,” Cr Rossiter said.
“We’re really pleased to be hosting another Victorian Motocross Championship, as we did last year, and we hold it in high-regard and we hope to do as best we can to put on the best possible event we can,” Brad, who would like to thank all his club volunteers who have worked so hard ahead of the event, added.
Round 1 of the 2016 Victorian Senior Motocross Championships takes place on the weekend of March 5-6 at the Blue Rock Motorcycle Club on Coach Road in Newborough.
