LAYLA Norton is revving-up for more podium finishes when she takes on the boys at the second round of the state’s premier motocross competition for juniors – the 2016 M2R Helmets Victorian Junior Motocross Championships Presented by Honda Parts & Accessories – at the Shipwreck Coast Motorcycle Club in Warrnambool this weekend, April 9-10.
The talented 13-year-old from Lorne is the sister of rising motocross star Callum Norton, 15, who much like her brother, has a real knack for motocross racing after finishing second overall against 22 boys in the 85/150cc BW C Grade class in the opening round of the competition at Korumburra earlier in March.
Impressively, Layla managed to finish with a third, and two second places, to secure second overall with 94 points. “I got involved in the sport when my brother started racing. I wanted to do it as well and I really enjoy it,” Layla said.
“Finishing second was really exciting especially because it was against all those boys. To be honest, I didn’t really care about racing the boys but getting second-place has changed all that,” Layla added.
“I hope to be able to finish in the top three again,” she said. “I really liked the track at Korumburra. It really rutted up quite quickly,” Layla added.
Layla finished third overall in the Girls class. On the second round that takes place at Warrnambool this weekend, Layla said: “I’m really looking forward to competing in the Girls class again.
“That’s really my main goal is to do really well in that one,” she added. “Warnambool is one of my favourite tracks.”
Whilst she’s currently competing in the sport for fun, Layla would like to make it a career one day.
“It would be pretty awesome to one day compete in the Women’s World Motocross Championships like Maddy Brown and Meghan Rutledge are doing at the moment,” she continued.
“I’d also really like to thank my parents for helping support me and Callum throughout the season. It’s definitely been great,” she praised.
Round 2 of the 2016 M2R Helmets Victorian Junior Motocross Championships Presented by Honda Parts & Accessories takes place at the Shipwreck Coast Motorcycle Club in Lake Gillear, Warrnambool from April 9-10.
