MILDURA speedway young gun Oliver Hamilton will go up against the nation’s best young speedway racers tomorrow, December 19 for the coveted 2015 Victorian U16 250cc Speedway Championship at Albury-Wodonga.
The 15-year-old from Irymple has been traversing the country over the last few weeks competing in the country’s top speedway events in New South Wales, South Australia and along the Murray River.
He recently competed at the Ashley Jones Memorial speedway meeting at Albury-Wodonga in November where he finished third behind 250cc World Champion Matthew Gilmore from NSW and fellow Victorian James Davies.
“It was a pretty good result finishing third to those guys. It was a dedicated meeting for Ashley Jones and I felt pretty honoured to be chosen to be in the support event for him,” Oliver said.
“It should be a great weekend for the Victorian U16 250cc Championship this weekend. I’ll give it a good crack and see what happens,” he added.
Oliver is hoping the heat – an expected top of 39 degrees – won’t be too much to handle. He’s also hoping to be able to match it with the best.
In January, Oliver won the U16 Australian Pairs Solo in Queensland. “I’ll be aiming to run with the best boys, stick with them. If I can stay up with them and beat a few of those quicker riders I’ll be more than happy,” Oliver said.
“It’s a great track at Albury-Wodonga. It’s a big and fast track with a lot of room to race,” he added.
On why he loved the sport of speedway, Oliver replied: “I just love the speed and the fact the bikes have no brakes. It’s different but it’s great. I would love to one day race internationally. That’s my goal,” Oliver said.
He will also be competing in the 2016 Australian U16 250cc Speedway Solo Championship at Gillman Speedway in South Australia on January 23.
Oliver would like to thank everyone who has been supporting him throughout the journey.
