MILDURA’S Byren Gates is eager to get amongst the country’s best sidecar riders at the 2017 Victorian Speedway Sidecar Championships at Olympic Park Speedway this Saturday night, January 28.
Australian No. 5 sidecar rider Gates, along with passenger Mick O’Loughlin, says he’s definitely looking forward to the event after having a disappointing year last year.
“We’ve only had two rides together this year. I broke my leg in July and Mick had a hernia in October so we haven’t been able to ride for a while,” Byren said.
Byren is also hoping to improve on his performance at last year’s state title. “We had a terrible night. We had some bike problems so it will be good to make up for last year’s performance. We’re definitely aiming to win it,” Byren added.
“We went to Gillman Speedway in South Australia last week and the bike performed really well. We finished fourth in the final and we’re trying to get our set-up ready before the Australian Speedway Sidecar Championships at Gillman in April,” he said.
“It’s always nice to compete at your hometown track. The track has changed a bit over the years but it still provides some really good racing,” Byren continued.
“We’ll aim to get more points at the start of the night so we can end up with the better gate pick so that we get a better gate towards the B Final but it would be nice to go straight through to the A Final,” Bryen added.
