HORSHAM motocross rider Cory Watts powered to the top of the A Open class in the second round of the Honda Genuine Parts & Accessories Victorian Senior Motocross Championships Presented by Bridgestone at Colac on the weekend of April 23-24.
Cory, 17, from Warracknabeal, now leads the A Open class by 4 points over Lachlan Terry and Tyler Lange after winning one race and finishing second on Saturday at the Colac Motorcycle Club.
“I had a very good day in the A Open class. I didn’t have the best of starts and there was a little bit of a smaller field compared to the A Lites that I was competing in but I was still able to come through the field a bit stronger,” Cory said.
“The track at Colac was very difficult and very challenging. I just had to ride it to the conditions and ride smartly,” he added.
Cory also said he faced a very strong field of riders in Terry and Lange, as well as Jayden Brewster in the A Open class. “It’s really good racing in this class. With less riders, it makes it a bit tighter up the front.
“It would be very good to maintain the lead in the A Open class over the next two rounds, which, hopefully, I’ll pull it off and it’ll be happy days,” he added.
“With the remaining two rounds, I hope to be consistent, and keep the bike upright. I like to pull back on the throttle a lot so if I can keep up the good work and keep it on two wheels I should be laughing,” Cory continued.
He also competes in the A Lites class where he is currently sitting in sixth-place and the Under 19s in the 2016 Motul MX Nationals where he is currently sitting twelfth out of 40-odd riders.
On the third round of the VSMXC in Wonthaggi in June, Cory said: “I like the layout of the Wonthaggi track. I like how it has the mixture of clay and sand. I’m really good at clay and there’s not much sand out Horsham way.
“I’ve just got to get really good starts. It’s got a big-sweeping first turn so hopefully I get out in front first and check out,” Cory added.
“I’d like to thank Scriven’s Racing, Moore’s Bulk Haulage & Storage, Ken Collins from KCR, KAJX Communications, BP Australia, and my Dad for all their support throughout the season,” he praised.
